Importance of TechED and other similair events

October 18, 2010 Leave a comment

Just finished reading another great article by Gavin Halse called “Has IT been sidelined by Success?”.

This has just again highlighted for me the importance of events like TechED. As Gavin mentioed in his post, it and technology are more and more considered as commodities, and the IT departments have to more than double their efforts to show the value add they bring to the organisations.

What better place for IT, in whatever shape and form, than TechED to really understand how more they can levarage of their investements. What better place for ISVs to further differentiate their solutions to these industries to ensure the value add they bring to the party.

Looking forward to some more great posts Gavin.

TechED Day 1 : Preparation

October 18, 2010 Leave a comment

As always I made sure that I am here atleast an hour before my first session. Why, well there is the usual wireless lan setup of both my phone, netbook and laptop. Making sure I get the lay of the land anda rough idea of my session rooms.

Things tend to get a bit hectic, especially if your calendar is fully book, including lunchbox sessions.

Expo also open 30 mins before the first session, so it gives me a little time to see what is there and know when I will be able to visit the various stands. Obviously I need to find the refreshments stands to make sure I get my early morning cuppa.

Chat again later…

Ubuntu Netbook gone… Welcome back XP

October 17, 2010 Leave a comment

In some of my previous posts, which incidently is still on my old Live Spaces account, I trashed my XP Netbbok and went through two seperate installs. The last being Ubuntu Netbook.

In these posts I highlighted some irritations which turned out to be related to the linux kernal. And Acer amptly informed me that they cannot assist me over the phone or by means of a download to recover my XP install, since I trashed my recovery partition as well.

So tonight, with techED looming in the morning, I decided to play a little and try and get my netbook back to somethig that will hibernate properly. I should have known by now that it would be much easier that what the Acer support guys made it out to be. A quick google got me the tools I wanted to create a USB XP install.

And this is where I am now. Another 15 minutes away from a working XP installation again. Just in time for me to get a few hours sleep, ready for my first sessions at TechED Africa 2010. As I have done in previous years with TechED, I’ll be posting something interesting daily on what has happened or something relating to my sessions for the day.

So welcome back XP. You were missed during my uneventful time with linux…

TechED Africa 2010 is finally here…

October 16, 2010 Leave a comment

Finally, well almost, the day is here. This for me has been a much anticipated event. Not so much as a first time, because it isn’t, but there are some announcements that I’m hoping for which just feels much better when you are there in person.

TechED Africa 2010 this year will be covering lots of SharePoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010, Windows Phone 7, Silverlight and the usual stuff.

Something I am really looking forward to is Kinect. I’ve been following all things Kinect since it’s first leak as Project Natal. Seeing live in action will be great.

So if you are in the area, pop in.
